This is one of those extraordinary international issues that has the potential to play out in ways that could create explosive consequences. On the one hand my soul jumps for joy at the possibility that justice may yet be served — while on the other my historian’s training whispers “be careful what you wish for” because if history has taught us one thing that is absolutely certain it is that powerful men and great nations do not go quietly into the night, acquiescing to the alleged (true or otherwise) moral authority of others. I have to wonder where in the hell this might actually be going because I’m fairly certain this country will not allow one of its presidents (no matter how much we may want to get rid of the guy) to ever stand trial in an international court. I am not sure what would happen if he were found quilty in abstentia (or if anyone would care) but I’m fairly certain what would happen if he was captured & arrested and forcibly brought to trial. Bush may have more sins on his head than General Noriega but the United States of America is not Panama so it seems unthinkable to me that we would ever allow an ex-president to be tried outside the US for war crimes. His innocence or guilt has nothing to do with it. It’s all about power. As I already said we’re not Panama.
Thank you for the post; it’s a very important story.
