I had always heard that the white stone wall around the original Shaw’s garden had been built by slaves, but like you, didn’t think of Shaw as a slave owner. I had never heard of the Meachum crossing either. Here in Richmond, the city has erected a slave trail (http://www.richmondgov.com/CommissionSlaveTrail/). It’s important for history to be told and to be remembered. I would hope like you that all over St. Louis city, historic markers could be created to remember a tragic and sad part of US history.
