Your critique of modern news and news anchors is spot on. However, most of my experience with Shieffer comes from his Sunday bobblehead mediations, and there he is simply abominable, along with all the other Sunday talk-fest anchors, no matter the network. Lies constantly go unchallenged, if someone outright dodges or obfuscates a question he may ask it once more, but that is usually it, and when they repeat the dodge he will just move on. Many times it seems like the staff or Bob just didn’t do their research. If they gave me a list of guests and the questions to be asked, chances are I could tell you 75% of what the pols from either party would say.

But when you confront and afflict the comfortable, booking becomes harder and harder…just look at Maddow’s show…so like most journalism today it ends up being more about maintaining access than ruffling feathers…leave it to the bloggers to do the real heavy lifting.

Nice article. But careful about putting Bob Schieffer with Cronkite or even Pelley. Schieffer was downright rude to Ron Paul simply because Ron Paul was challenging the assumptions of warmongers who are all too common in the Beltway. Schieffer was good buddies with the Bush family and his phrasing and coverage showed that over the years. What made Cronkite very interesting was that he was friendly with Spiro Agnew and yet did not miss opportunities to allow reporters to cover Agnew in a way that revealed Agnew’s mendacity or often meanness as the hatchet man for Nixon.

This is just more of the pro Israel narrative disguised as being liberal…These folks you mention with high regard are nothing more than propagandists who are pro war, pro Israel, pro bailout, pro conservative agenda. There are no main stream news organizations in America who are liberal. Not one news channel tells the truth about America or wars or the banks. This article is garbage.

That’s an excellent analysis, and of course Russ Mitchell is from St. Louis so it’s always an added bonus to watch his appropriate delivery of the news. The problem with the 5:30 news, though, is that as commute times & distances have gotten longer, women have entered the workforce, and after-school activities have gotten longer, fewer people are even home by that time. That’s on top of, obviously, the growth of the cable networks and the Internet.
