To receive food stamps one must have an address. Fuel assistance is also based on income for a single person. Again one needs an address. No one can get section 8 housing without some income. The safety net for the poor is very limited. To get these benefits you either are or are going to be among the unhealthiest of citizens. At the food pantry where I volunteer 31% of our clients work, 27% are unemployed, 22% seniors, 13% disabled and 7% other. That’s what we’re seeing in suburban MA.
