I am not a Republican but I am a conservative, I support the internet sales tax. It would help small and local businesses, especially retailers and manufacturers. Also I think other states have shown that the tax can be collected efficiently.
We may have to tweak the tax system. We might lower the overall sales tax rate slightly, or keep it the same and lower income taxes slightly. If municipalities really need more revenue, we might leave the sales tax rate as it is. (However the way some municipalities spend leads me to believe they are sucking up too much of the people’s money. Have you seen some of the gold-plated suburban “rec centers”?)
We can all agree that taxes are necessary at every level of government. We can also all agree that at some point tax rates are so high that they stifle employment and initiative and become confiscatory. Therefore the only real debate is about the rate of taxation. We should discuss these issues rationally.
However to say someone is “mean” or motivated “blind hate” just because she thinks taxes should be a few percentage points lower than you think they should be, is really childish. Certainly there is someone out there who thinks taxes should be higher than you do. Does that make you mean? I know that part of being liberal is to feel superior to conservatives, since you are more intelligent, compassionate, and informed, but this kind of rant does not really help us agree on good policies.
