It’s not that difficult: conservatives believe that for most people a job is a surer way to avoid poverty, and to achieve independence and dignity, than a government program, and that most people will thrive if we just leave them alone. Some even believe that sometimes government programs even hurt individuals, families, and institutions and leave them worse off than before. Surely everyone can think of an example of this.
However liberals do not want to consider this. They would rather think of themselves as morally superior to the mean selfish conservatives. Although this is rather simple and childlike, I guess it is a rather pleasant way to drift through life.
