*Disclaimer*

While I do recognize that sexism plays a major role in certain aspects of our society, such as movies and video games, I do think the feminists have rendered their own movement irrelevant. If they want to bring the movement back into relevance, they need to start addressing some other issues that involve gender equality.

For example, why is registering for selective service mandatory for men but not for women? Why do men receive longer sentences than women for similar crimes? (http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2144002#)

Finally, as long as abortion is legal why should unwed fathers be required to pay child support? The argument for abortion is that the kid is a part of the woman’s body and therefore it is her choice to decide what to do with it. However, if it is a part of the woman’s body and she chooses to keep it, it is her moral, financial, and ought to be her legal responsibility to take care of the kid. Anything else is inconsistent.

Great article, Abby. Unfortunately the pervading attitude in our country is that feminism is no longer relevant. Just a few days ago, my long-time SO asked me if I was a feminist – at which point I choked on my Chipotle burrito and said…”Are you kidding me? You’ve been dating me for a year and a half and you didn’t know I was a feminist? I thought YOU were a feminist.” To which he responded “How can I be a feminist, I’m a guy?” Feminism shouldn’t just apply to women it should be a movement sweeping both genders. Thank you for standing up for womens rights.

I kind of agree that it’s at least waning especially among our younger sisters.
Example, I was in a gas station and three female employees were talking, some were stocking shelves and I couldn’t help overhear their loud conversation. They were bad mouthing a girl who wouldn’t take a $9 an hour job for whatever reason.
I felt like telling them ‘you know part of the feminist movement was that women were to stand up for other women’.
You know? We have it bad enough without being taken down by people on our own side.
I’ve also found that we have to keep saying what the feminist movement is or what it’s supposed to mean, kind of what you had to do in your article. It’s also like we have to keep reminding people what the older generation has done for us and how far we’ve come. Like they just take it all for granted.
