Everything becomes about what boys do and what girls do, and those same schemas carry on in some diluted form through their adolescent years, not really fading until the 50s. That’s why it is sooo important to instill an appreciation for gender equality in people as children.

I’ve always been a huge proponent of letting boys play with dolls and letting girls play with trucks. What I’ve found especially interesting is that when I offer my 1 year old baby brother a variety of toys, he inevitably picks the “pink kitty.” Why? It’s the brightest, softest, most vibrant toy. Yes, he’ll pick up the barbie and spin the wheels on toy cars, but the toy he loves the most is a Build-a-Bear hand me down. Stuffed animals are not stereo-typically intended for either gender – yet it is this fundamentally gender neutral toy that attracts his attention best. Childhood curiosity know not gender schemas nor societal expectations – and it’s the most beautiful form of innocence.
