Comments on: Mark Cuban chooses thought and reflection over piling on https://occasionalplanet.org/2014/05/27/mark-cuban-chooses-thought-and-reflection-over-piling-on/ Progressive Voices Speaking Out Wed, 06 May 2015 18:58:32 +0000 hourly 1 By: Hafsa Mansoor https://occasionalplanet.org/2014/05/27/mark-cuban-chooses-thought-and-reflection-over-piling-on/#comment-6307 Tue, 27 May 2014 23:32:00 +0000 http://www.occasionalplanet.org/?p=28661#comment-6307 I truly believe that Mark Cuban is on the right path with his comments; acknowledging that a problem exists is the first step to correcting it. Those who call Cuban a racist with the rationale that he openly discriminated against those who look different from him and “othered” these people ignore the fact that in truth we all have these fears of others’ behaviors and a lot of times those niggling doubts DO stem from appearances, be they racial or otherwise. Seeing a homeless man on the street and a Wall Street suit, we are more likely to peg the homeless man as a drug user, simply because that’s a stereotype ingrained within our culture. I therefore applaud Cuban for going onto a limb against the stifling cries that racism no longer exists and noting that we act discriminatory everyday but pass it off under the guise of “logic”.
As for the Trayvon Martin correlation, I admit that it was a tragedy that he died, and even more of a tragedy that his maybe-murderer was entirely acquitted against public sentiment. But shouldn’t we LEARN from that then? Not tip-toe around any and every mention of a black kid and a hoodie and learn what that really means for society today and our perception from others? I don’t think so.
