However, Senator Onder did a very good thing yesterday. He introduced SB 399 — this year’s paper ballot bill. It would phase out the use of the direct record touch screen voting machines (DREs) and make a paper ballot the official ballot in the state. Why do we need this bill? Computer security experts have repeatedly warned us not to use these machines due to the ease with which they can be hacked to flip an election WITHOUT DETECTION; the paper audit trail is useless because very few voters bother to verify it, as evidenced by the high number of paper jams in the printers (see the STL County BOE tech logs which always contain numerous reports of jams and other serious problems with these machines, such as calibration problems causing votes to show on the screen for the incorrect candidate ); by law nobody but the software manufacturer can have access to the software that runs the machines–and yet there is no reliable means to audit the results the software produces. It’s time for us to put an end to our “Just Trust the Machine” elections in Missouri. We need elections that are verifiable. Everyone, please tell your Senator to strongly support SB 399.
