I used to think that both sides agreed
upon the things we need to accomplish as a country, as a species, and
were agreeable with our steady forward momentum–they simply disagreed
on how best to meet those mutually agreed upon goals. While I still find
that to be generally true, I think we’ve become too enamored with the
fight, the competition. If we removed the labels–Republican, Democrat,
Independent, etc.–we can accomplish so much more. An idea can only
honestly be criticized on its merit, not just the source. If Congress
were deciding on issues in such a way, they’d have more time off to
spend with their families because they could get a lot accomplished in a
short period of time.
I wonder how many people would be in favor of
abolishing political parties and publicly funding all campaigns so we
can get down to voting for the people with the best ideas and the
willingness to make them happen?
