Mon, 22 Feb 2016 22:54:00 +0000http://www.occasionalplanet.org/?p=33690#comment-6905When I hear “states rights”, I expect the people of a state are going to suffer. “States right” advocates seem to expect state rights to come before (and be held above) the people’s rights and/or federal rights. That’s because “states rights” supporters use it as a cudgel to beat back progress, denying people the right to marry whomever they love, women their right to abortion, eligible voters the right to vote, and everyone the right to safe, clean water/air/food. As you point out, it’s a means to circumvent democracy. It is “big government” at work. Politicians and voters who are truly interested in freedom and democracy should, at the very least, be having this discussion. And so should leaders wanting to truly unite this country. Statism is the antithesis of liberty and democracy and has no place in a modern democratic civil society.
