It makes me wonder how many lives could be saved if cops approached certain situations with questions rather than demands, and with caution rather than guns drawn. With all of these avoidable deaths, we have to be going wrong somewhere along the lines. It seems very reasonable that the place to start is finding the right candidates for the job of police officer, then training them the way we want them to approach their relationships with the community–and firing them if they screw it up to the extent that someone unnecessarily loses their life, like anyone else would be in their jobs. Independent investigation teams & prosecution should also always be on the table. Someone has to be around to keep people honest, even (and especially) those in charge of law enforcement. Selective enforcement is not justice, it hurts us all. Great approach to this conversation, thanks for the timely reminder that we have somewhere to start in fixing this mess.
