Good catch! It doesn’t seem like this should be an overly complicated issue. Most Americans agree that guns should be regulated and we need to be more discerning about who we allow to have them. We are allowed to amend the constitution accordingly; it’s a living document, not one set in stone. But the NRA, their cohorts, enablers, and supporters are running around talking about constitutional rights while completely ignoring the actual documentation and, I think, deliberately misrepresenting its content. The media is complicit in reframing the discussion in a way that makes it about the right of people to own guns, rather than the right of everyone to live and live free of violence.
My favorite amendment right is the 9th: “The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be
construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.”
