Mon, 21 Nov 2016 20:16:00 +0000http://www.occasionalplanet.org/?p=35165#comment-7190I keep reading that there are various countries that are inexpensive to live in and happy to welcome US retirees. A list in one recent article included Spain, Portugal, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Mexico, Malaysia, Colombia, Ecuador and Panama. Not that I really get this whole idea, given that (a) if you don’t know or learn the language you are barely functional except around other expats, (b) in a lot of these places you can’t even drink the water, (c) many of them have political issues of their own, (d) if a Trump administration does something seriously harmful to the world economy it’s likely to be bad there too, (e) what passes for medical care in some of these places?, and most important, (f) it’s hard to imagine basically cutting myself off from family, friends and other support networks. The way I look at it, right now my jobs are to do the most I can on an individual person to person basis for people who are in the alt right’s crosshairs, and continue to use the machinery of democracy to effect change, in the hope that this too shall pass. If things get actually overtly fascist (people being sent to detention camps, an anti-Muslim Kristallnacht, etc.), then we all have a different set of choices to make.
