a) Residents have been dynamiting reefs for years, which allows storm surges to flood the islands much more easily
b) the islands fresh ground water is depleted, which causes the land to sink
c) the islands are an atoll, on top of an underwater volcanic peak that is subsiding as is normal with old seamounts.
While “described as the worlds first climate refugees”, the fact is that the population of the Carterets has not decreased, it has INCREASED, as only a few families have left the islands, and the rest continue to expand. So any claim about refugees is fake news.

The island communities are just one example of people losing their land, heritage, and culture because of climate change. It seems like the ones losing most not only contributed least to the problem but don’t have a voice on the global stage either. Their plight is particularly poignant.
