Money, Money, Money!, rural voters aren’t big donors so why should the DNC try to appeal to them? We need fundraising!, we don’t need to actually speak to the people. Two politicians have proven that this paradigm is changing, Bernie Sanders and uh oh Donald Trump. Bernie nearly beat Hillary in the primary with mainly individual donations and a real message that voters could connect with. Donald Trump beat Hillary spending about half what she did. Many voters voted for him because he was speaking about their issues, jobs, trade, etc. So they overlooked all the racism and misogyny in his campaign, they voted for him despite that, not because of it. Used to be that money was more important than the message; voters could be tricked with TV ad space. Not anymore, the internet is changing all that. If you don’t have a message you can never connect with voters, Hillary and the DNC still don’t seem to have learned that. Hopefully they will before 2018.

I think you summed up nicely why people don’t come out to vote, too. Voters want public servants who represent them/their interests. If one party drops the ball and the other picks it up, well, logic dictates… If neither party cares to play, voters may just take their ball and go home.

How much do gerrymandering and voter suppression laws play into these numbers, I wonder?
