Comments on: Do African countries want your second-hand clothes? Yes and No https://occasionalplanet.org/2017/06/29/african-countries-want-second-hand-clothes-yes-no/ Progressive Voices Speaking Out Fri, 30 Jun 2017 05:08:00 +0000 hourly 1 By: Stacy Mergenthal https://occasionalplanet.org/2017/06/29/african-countries-want-second-hand-clothes-yes-no/#comment-17137 Fri, 30 Jun 2017 05:08:00 +0000 http://occasionalplanet.org/?p=37266#comment-17137 Wow, I never considered the question of what happens to donated clothing. I just assumed it went to local needy. These numbers are staggering. One wonders about the African people who cannot afford even the cheapest of second-hand clothing, but it sounds like the idea of raising import duties and adding sales tax would be the closest to an ideal solution. Not only a source of revenue for the people (hopefully a boost to local economies) but also jobs, which would help people afford spending locally and continue the cycle. This is going to make me stop and think about how we handle used clothing. I certainly don’t want some unknown entity profiting off a goodwill gesture at the expense of the very people that are supposed to be helped. That sounds unethical to me.
