I wrote to my Senator, Bernie Sanders, and asked him to put forth a bill that would treat civilians the same way as soldiers when it comes to gun ownership. First, a physical and psychological evaluation. Then, whomever passes muster undergoes intense gun safety education and training, which they must pass in order to obtain live ammunition or fire a weapon. Testing/evaluation and training continue for the duration of gun ownership. Background checks and registration are really the least of it. We need to go much, much further. I hope some day lawmakers will go beyond talk and take necessary action.
