You said it early on, They own him. They can’t go back from Trump. Who is his successor? Marco Rubio? Tom Cotton? All these bland choices that will say what? I can’t think of a single platform they could advocate for that would be as exciting to the base as Build a Wall, Repeal Obamacare, Kick Out Illegals, Bomb Them All, ect. He yelled everything the right has only been inferring for years. Since the Gingrich revolution in the 1990s the Republican party has been a series of one-upsmanship. They have to top the outrageousness year over year because their policies are antithetical to the needs of their base. It always is the moving target of “well we just didn’t do it enough.” How is it the Republicans can cut taxes over and over with the promise it will trickle down and never does? Oh we just didn’t cut enough taxes. When globalization isn’t a net benefit because people will be able to afford more even if their wages are depressed? Deregulation. When they are proved wrong, they muddy the waters and don’t have to be held to account.
