The Republican Party is adopting “We Built It” as a convention theme — a catch-phrase built on the Fox News-fueled distortion<\/a> of the President’s remarks tying American infrastructure and education to the success of businesses. \u00a0But the convention itself\u2014its location and its finances\u2014are ironic object lessons in how even the Republican party itself benefits from taxpayer support and infrastructure.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n

Media Matters Action Network<\/a> offers some revealing facts about the Republican convention site:<\/p>\n

-The Republican Party’s national convention will be held next week at the Tampa Bay Times Forum<\/a> in Florida — an arena that was constructed with $80 million worth of city and county bonds backed in part by taxes.<\/p>\n

-The Forum is now actually owned by the county government, which then leases it back to the Tampa Bay Sports Authority. The Authority itself was\u00a0created<\/a>\u00a0as a public agency in 1965.<\/p>\n

-The Republican Party received over $18 million from American taxpayers<\/a> to help pay for their convention.<\/p>\n

-The Republican convention site\u00a0received<\/a>\u00a0$50 million in federal grants for convention security, which is\u00a0reportedly being<\/a>\u00a0spent on “extra police, technology, vehicles, uniforms and gear.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The convention arena they are meeting in was publicly financed. Our public safety system will protect them from the storms, and our transportation system will take them there. They didn\u2019t build it. We all did.<\/p>\n
