<\/a>One can always count on Robert Reich to make savvy observations about politics and finance. Bring the two topics together, and it makes for perfection.<\/p>\n

Reich recently posted the following about an encounter with a Trump supporter LINK<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cHi,\u201d I said. \u201cNoticed your Trump bumper sticker.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYup,\u201d he said, a bit defensively.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope you don\u2019t mind my asking, but I\u2019m curious. Why are you supporting him?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know he\u2019s a little bit much,\u201d said the Trump supporter. \u201cBut he\u2019s a successful businessman. And we need a successful businessman as president.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow do you know he\u2019s a successful businessman?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause he\u2019s made a fortune.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHas he really?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course. Forbes magazine says he\u2019s worth four and a half billion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean he\u2019s been a success,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn my book it does,\u201d said the Trump supporter.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, in 1976, when Trump was just starting his career, he said he was worth about $200 million,\u201d I said. \u201cMost of that was from his father.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat just proves my point,\u201d said the Trump supporter. \u201cHe turned that $200 million into four and a half billion. Brilliant man.\u201c<\/p>\n

\u201cBut if he had just put that $200 million into an index fund and reinvested the dividends, he\u2019d be worth twelve billion today,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

The Trump supporter went silent.<\/p>\n

“And he got about $850 million in tax subsidies, just in New York alone,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

More silence.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s not a businessman,\u201d I said. \u201cHe\u2019s a con man. “Hope you enjoy your coffee.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
