In the private sector, the St. Louis Cardinals and top player Albert Pujols are taking days, weeks, months, even years to do what can be done in a half hour. That\u2019s inefficiency unmatched by any level of government. How difficult can it be to work out an agreement where everybody\u2019s going to be rich?<\/p>\n

So here\u2019s what a half hour negotiation session between Bill DeWitt, Jr.<\/strong>, owner of the Cardinals, and Albert Pujols<\/strong> could look like.\u00a0 No attorneys allowed and Tony LaRussa can\u2019t come in with the \u201cnon-political\u201d Glenn Beck to offer advice.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m happy to play the role of facilitator for a 0% cut.<\/p>\n

\u201cBill, you know Albert; Albert you know Bill.\u00a0 Okay these negotiations don\u2019t have to be hard; it\u2019s not like we\u2019re trying to bring peace to the Middle East.\u00a0 \u00a0We should be able to get this done in less than a half hour.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the deal: I\u2019m going to give you a range of choices in four areas that are important to each of you. With or without a No. 2 pencil, indicate your choice(s) to each question. g)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Albert can take 0.5% of his salary in any given year and have that amount matched by the Cardinals for the purpose of reimbursing the city of St. Louis and\/or the state of Missouri for the tax abatements that the Cardinals previously negotiated.<\/p>\n

h)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Albert can take 0.5% of his salary in any given year and have that amount matched by the Cardinals for the purpose of meeting basic economic and social needs in Albert\u2019s home country of the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n
